Tsavo National Park is Kenya's largest protected area, split by the Nairobi–Mombasa highway into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Together they cover over 20,000 km² — roughly the size of Wales. Tsavo East's vast open red-dust plains are home to the famous 'red elephants', stained by the iron-rich volcanic soil, alongside enormous buffalo herds, crocodile-filled rivers, and the Lugard Falls. Tsavo West is greener and more varied, featuring the Mzima Springs — where crystal-clear water bubbles up through ancient lava — ancient volcanic cones, and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. The park straddles the route between Nairobi and the coast, making it ideal for a multi-day safari-to-beach itinerary.
